51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Master of Arts in Teaching history combines deep content knowledge with educational pedagogy. Students take graduate courses in both history and education, preparing to effectively deliver advanced historical understanding in diverse classroom settings.

This history master’s program was developed for high school and middle school teachers with an initial license who are seeking a professional license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Through content-based history courses and educational training, you’ll develop advocacy and leadership competencies. You’ll also gain a solid foundation in effective teaching, learning, research and communication skill, as well as a deeper understanding of instruction and assessment techniques for diverse learners.

Update to Admissions Requirements

A composite score of 290 or greater on the quantitative and verbal parts of the GRE General Test is no longer an admissions requirement for the History MAT program. 

Program of Study for Master’s in History (MAT)

The geographic and chronological focus of the history electives at BSU are diverse. Students may take a class on the American Civil War one semester and Apartheid South Africa the next.

BSU’s master’s degree in history (MAT) leads to a professional teaching license in Massachusetts. Some of our graduates also go on to pursue educational leadership and doctorate degrees.

Graduate Funding Opportunities

The College of Graduate Studies provides various opportunities for graduate students to receive funding while working towards their degrees. Appointments are competitive and are determined by undergraduate and/or graduate grade point averages, pertinent experience, educational preparation and interviews.
