Massachusetts/New England weather is always unpredictable. In the summer, weather can range from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter, temperatures can range from 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes temperatures can fluctuate dramatically during the same day. You could go to class with a sunny and clear sky and within an hour it could be pouring rain when you go to leave. You must be prepared for it all. Luckily, there are many weather apps to help you determine how you should dress for the day and what to expect.
In the U.S.A. temperatures are measured in Fahrenheit. If you are unfamiliar with Fahrenheit try using this .
Changing weather can also bring colds and allergies. Make sure you are taking vitamins, washing your hands regularly and keeping tissues on you. These items can be picked up at pharmacies in town and close to campus.
Summer
- Although it may be hot outside. It is still a good idea to keep a sweater handy because nights can be dramatically cooler and the air conditioning during the day will be on high in most places you visit.
Fall/Autumn
- Fall days can vary dramatically. Days tend to feel more like summer and nights more like winter. A fleece jacket and/or thick sweaters are recommended for the first half of fall. Winter coats are recommended for the second half of the season.
Winter
- Before the snow arrives make sure you have water and food in your room/apartment in case of a power outage or emergency. It is also recommended to have your laptops, tablets, and cellphones full charged prior to a snow storm.
- Check school closings or class cancelations through the BSU app.
- Stay indoors during snow storms.
- Charge all devices in case of power loss.
- If you decide to venture outside, dress for the weather. Snow boots, gloves, a hat, and winter jackets are recommended.
- Walk carefully on snowy and icy sidewalks.
- If you must shovel, stretch before going outside.
- Keep dry and change out of wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly.
- Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the daylight, try not to travel alone, keep others informed of your schedule, stay on main roads, make sure you have more than enough fuel for the trip, and make sure your phone is charged.
- You need to be dressed in warm clothes when you are outside, but all buildings on campus and public locations are fully heated.
Spring
- There is a saying "April showers bring May flowers." This means it will rain a lot for the majority of spring. It ranges from cold and raining to humid/hot and rainy. Prepare a light rain jacket, rain boots, and an umbrella. On cooler days you may want to wear a sweatshirt under your rain jacket.
IMPORTANT
- In the event BSU closes for a weather related emergency please be aware dining hall hours and availability may change.
- If you bring a car to campus during a snow storm or anticipated snow storm be sure to follow Parking and Connect Card Services guidelines for snow emergencies.
